Mind-quake, paradoxes and features

Study Theobald's question of 'mind-quake', find a real-life example and describe it

"Children speak when chicken .." - old days children were just there, when they grow older they got a saying e.g. like where to live, what to eat, what to wear, what to think. Nowadays they are part of the family, and listened more (how to use computer, internet) etc.

In old days scientist worked alone and developed ideas and theories a long time. Nowadays nobody works alone and people might test things and publish more easily. It has changed the process as a lot of things what is not "real science" is downgrading education. BA level is worth nothing, MA level might be still something (but not for long), and only good option to have a starting point is to get a phd. At the same time it will not guarantee you anything - it is just starting point. It is similar to life-long learning and that in ICT career you don’t know what to start learning and who to became as positions and tasks changes rapidly.

Woman right to vote, speak is also something what has changed over the years. But still I myself feel sometimes, that even in Estonia some treat you as a "little woman" or "blond" , "pretty face".

Pick one of Handy's paradoxes, find a good real-life illustrative case and describe it

The paradox of time. The application of modern technology means less time is needed to make and do things. People should have more spare time. But time has become a competitive weapon and getting things done quickly is imperative. As a result, many of those who work have less time than ever before.

I feel it myself - when I have the skills I do more, when I do more I have less free time. I don’t think any more, I just act when I see something I would like to do. I do a good job of doing things. At the same time same people develop these skills (usually younger), older people (some of them) speed also up their doings, but the pace is different, so youngsters always feel the world is too slow (eg. with older teacher).

Pick one of Castells' features of network society and write a short analysis

changes in work and employment - emergence of flexi-workers (working without fixed time, place, or regulations); new methods allow more flexible approaches, but also produce more stress and discontent; the share of temporary and telework increases.

When I ended gymnasium we got a job (my schoolmates etc.). The idea of - if you do well, are educated etc. you will get a good job. Second lie was that you would have the job in a long time (maybe for life, so you must choose well). //as with your partner. In that time the border had just opened for the Estonia, also people just started to talk about extending learning process. I hated project work as it seems to be too temporary, stressful.

What has happened in 15 years.. a lot of jobs, and even more will be flexible and you never know what to expect when world economic change or just the company boss thinks that it is wise for him/her to just shut down the business for the better offer from the computing company. Some predict because of that small companies will develop their products (like online shops where you can mix your own service) and flourish, at the same time big companies will shout down as they are not so flexible. In ICT industry I see a lot of companies (big) develop modules or blocks what they can flexibly arrange and I think they will survive this.

For the people it is not good, at it is constantly ticking in your head - you can be out of business, your skills can mean nothing (so it changes your self-esteem), you will be out of business, so you will not have a money for x of time. At the same time if you save money - there is nowhere to save it (as it looses its value). For now the real-estate seems promising, but it can also backfire of country getting info a war, some new taxes or other.

  1. Love the BA/MA/PhD sequence (reading this should be accompanied by the soundtrack of "One learns" by Ruja, a famous Estonian rock band).
