Founder of David White turn based strategic game Wesnoth focus on building an army to get through the scenarios or campaigns as it compared to Ubisoft Heros of Might and Magic or Kalypso Disciples series. As it is Open Source game it is developed as community project rather than profit software.
First I mapped different possibilities in a game: there is a hero and units what can be different every scenario, the units gains levels; there are allies and enemies, each castle with its own hero and units. Usually the allies and enemies units differ in abilities. At first allies are usually human elf’s and emeries are orc´s and so on.
Player gathers money from villages, then recruits army and tries to win enemies with strategies. The adventure usually has the main goal like find something or kills somebody. Also the situation changes when there is a night or day. Different missions can have limitations like how many turns you can take to win. Game usually gets more complicated when you develop your skills but as it is community based development then some campaigns are not so good quality as the others.
To develop the game I have gathered some ideas what can be done like you can go to place x, kill a enemy, gather gold, level a units, defend a hero or bridges or villages in a X number turns, must do x number attack to the enemy or just hang on using only specific kind of units. There simple developments can be something like change maps, music, pictures, text and mix up source to make your own story.
The final conclusion is that it might be pretty good environment to test these kind of programming because it will surely give understanding what OSM is all about – working, sharing, developing and enjoying the process.
